Vivekananda Residential School for Destitute & Orphan Children, Managoli, Bijapur District: Construction of Toilet Blocks & Bathrooms
Sri Swamy Nirbhayananda, President of Vivekananda Residential School for Destitute & Orphan Children, Managoli, Bijapur, Karnataka - 586122 approached us that currently there are about 150 resident students in the school. Currently they have a small toilet facility which is being used only by the girls. The boys are using open place. A small covered area with thatched sheets is being used for bathing purposes. There is a requirement of 15 properly built bathrooms and toilets for proper convenience of the children. Our trustees visited the school and found that it is an urgent need. Thereafter a proper plan was made for the toilets, bathrooms and septic system which is estimated to cost about Rs. 12.00 Lakhs. The first payment of Rs. 3.00 Lakhs was made to Shri Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashram, Bijapur on 30th April 2010. The work of this project is progressing rather slowly because of unavailability of local construction labour but will be completed in the next 6 months. The total cost may exceed Rs. 12.00 Lakhs for this project under HMCT - V. S. Gaonkar Memorial Aid. Our Volunteers visited Managoli Schools 8th February 2011 to 10th February 2011 and reviewed the progress and also quality of work done so far. They have recommended for release of the next payment.
St. Theresa School, Madapura Village, Chamarajanagara District: Construction of Toilet Block
Fr. Ronald Danthi, Correspondent of this school approached us that the toilets built in 1994 in the school have no roofing, are old styled, have developed large cracks and the soak pit is overflowing. They requested HMCT help in helping them so that the children of this rural school can study in a healthy environment. The trustees visited the school and made a master plan to provide modern toilet and drainage system which is estimated to cost around Rs. 4.50 Lakhs. The work on this project under HMCT - V. S. Gaonkar Memorial Aid has already been started and can be completed in about 6 months as timely funds are provided. We have released Rs. 30,000/- to start up the work on 18th January 2011. They have requested for release of the next payment for continuing the work.
Government Primary School, Srirampura, Mysore: Change of Roof - Replaced all the wooden structure by steel structure and re-laid the roofing
HMCT received a request from the Headmistress of Government Primary School, Srirampura, Mysore that the tile roof of their school building is ready to collapse any day making it dangerous for the children to study in the school. After due permission from the government authorities the roof of the school was redone in the year 2010 - 2011 under HMCT - V. S. Gaonkar Memorial aid.
Government High School, Hebbal, Mysore: Table & desks for students and repair work for the building to ensure the classes do not get affected during rain
HMCT received a request from the Headmistress of Government High School, Hebbal that the SSLC students of the school had to sit on the floor in the classroom, which was very much detrimental to their education. Further Chejjas were not provided in the windows of the class rooms resulting in water coming in during rainy season. Since the request was found to be genuine, 15 sets of Desks and Benches and metal Chejjas were provided in 2008-09 to the school as HMCT - V. S. Gaonkar Memorial Aid.
Repair of leaky roof for Government Primary School, Mahadeva Colony, Mysore
In 2004, our trust wanted to address the infrastructure problems of the rural Government Schools. Some of these schools do not have proper toilets / water and in many the roofs of the classes leak like bathroom showers during rainy season. The Trust came up with an idea of doing major repairs to the roofs of such schools and also provide hand pumps and toilets with proper sewage facility. After taking due permission from the Education Department and Village Education committee, a pilot project was carried out in Government Lower Primary School, Mahadeva Colony. Unfortunately this scheme had to be discontinued after the pilot experience because of poor cooperation from the beneficiaries who wanted money to be handed to them rather than actual work.
Free Homeopathic Dispensary (1994 - 1999)
In 1994, we felt that the people suffering from chronic diseases like asthma, skin diseases, arthritis, stomach ailments etc were not getting proper cure from the allopathic treatments given to them in the Government hospitals. As such we started a Homeopathic dispensary in 1994 in the premises of Lions Sevaniketan School, Gokulam, where a qualified Homeopathic practitioner (Dr. Meena Kumari) was employed full time to provide free consultation and medicines to the general public. The Trust ran the dispensary successfully till 31st March 1999, and then handed over the management of the same to Lions Sevaniketan Society.
Tailoring Training Centre (1993 - 2009)
Once the rag picking girls were somewhat literate, they needed some training in an alternate vocation to earn a living. Keeping this in mind, the trust started a Tailoring Training Center in the premises of Bapuji Childrens Home in 1993. This training center trained approximately 10 to 15 girl children, and any other needy women every afternoon. The children trained here have found employment in garment factories in and around Mysore, and some of them even started their own small home industry. These classes ended in 2009 due to lack of students.
Literacy classes in the slums of Mysore (1991 - 2001)
In early 1990's many rag picking girls were found living in Mysore slums who were not going to school. To help them, it was decided to run Literacy Classes in several slums in the evening hours. During the period 1991-2001, the Trust ran 3 to 4 Adult Literacy Centers where 10 to 15 students were given education at basic literacy level. This program was discontinued in 2001 because the need had petered out.
